KJSEA Explained: Empower Your Child’s Journey to Excell Now

The transition from Junior Secondary to Senior Secondary School is a pivotal moment in a learner’s journey. Under Kenya’s Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, this transition is guided by the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).

For parents and guardians, understanding this new grading system is key—not just to interpret results, but to choose a senior school where your child can grow academically, morally, and spiritually.

What Is KJSEA?

KJSEA is a national assessment administered at the end of Grade 9. Unlike the old exam-only system, it measures a learner’s development in core competencies such as understanding, critical thinking, application of knowledge, communication, and problem-solving.

The goal of KJSEA is not competition, but placement—matching learners with schools where they can thrive and reach their full potential.

KJSEA Grading System Explained

The new CBE-based KJSEA grading system replaced the old A–E scale. It uses four main performance bands, each divided into two sub-levels:

  • EE – Exceeding Expectations: Mastered skills exceptionally and can apply knowledge independently.
    • EE1 (90–100%) – 8 points
    • EE2 (75–89%) – 7 points
  • ME – Meeting Expectations: Performing as expected.
    • ME1 – 6 points
    • ME2 – 5 points
  • AE – Approaching Expectations: Close to expected level but needs support.
    • AE1 – 4 points
    • AE2 – 3 points
  • BE – Below Expectations: Requires serious support and intervention.
    • BE1 – 2 points
    • BE2 – 1 point

Note: Parents often find it confusing that ‘EE’ is the highest, whereas in the old system ‘E’ was the lowest. This new system focuses on skills mastery, not just marks.

How Senior School Placement Works

Placement under CBE is based on a composite score, not KJSEA results alone:

  • KJSEA results: 60%
  • School-Based Assessments (Grades 7–9): 20%
  • KPSEA (Grade 6): 20%

This approach values consistent growth, discipline, and effort over time—principles we uphold at St. Joseph Girls Secondary School Maungu.

Why School Environment Matters

KJSEA results guide placement, but the right school shapes outcomes. A good senior school should provide:

  • Academic structure and mentoring
  • Moral and spiritual guidance
  • Emotional safety and discipline
  • Opportunities for talent discovery

At St. Joseph Girls Secondary School Maungu, we educate the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—grounded in Catholic values and time-tested traditions.

Our Commitment

As a Catholic boarding school under the Sisters of St. Joseph, Catholic Archdiocese of Mombasa, we prepare girls not only for assessments, but for life. Our offerings include:

KJSEA is a tool for direction, not fear. With the right school, mentors, and values, every learner can grow into her potential—regardless of starting point.
